One is never enough - which is why Smashing Magazine came out with a list of even More Web Design Trends for 2009. Most of these have been around for a while, some are just that what the article says - trends. Most of the "design styles" such as Retro, Textures, Price Tags, etc. are that. They will be used a lot now, but as designers tire of them, something else will take their place.

Others are an unstoppable freight train. If you don't get on now, you'll be left behind. Trends such as social design elements and out-of-the-box layouts are examples of this. They are part of the evolution of the web.

I am particularly interested where illustration and graphics are headed. Nearly all new web browsers are supporting SVG graphics (a vector graphics format). This could start a new renaissance on the graphical side of web design. SVG graphics are scalable, generally smaller in size, support transparency and layering... they could really open a lot of doors and shatter a lot of the notions of what a web site should look like.
